So before I got my hair this color.... it was black. So of course that means your going to have to strip the color from your hair one way or another. I used Color Oops which you can find at most drugstores! I did this process twice. This lifted my hair to a medium brown color. After a few days I used a bleach wash on my hair. I mixed bleach with 30 developer into my shampoo of choice and let that sit on my hair for about 10 minutes. After that and some coconut oil (lol) I was ready to go red!
Ive experimented with MANY different hair dye brands and shades. When I say many I mean probably 20. The one I found to have worked the best is.....Loreal HiColor. My hair never feels damaged and doesn't fade as quickly. This does have a bleaching agent in it though so try at your own risk and lay off on any excess damage you could be doing to your hair. Like blowdrying instead of towel drying.
Sometimes when its time to dye again I like to play around with shades. I will always use their "Red Hot" shade, but sometimes ill throw in a little copper or brown. I tend to go for warmer tones on me but if you like cooler tones you can always add in a cooler red or a cool brown to your mix.
Now for the party were really here for....how to maintain this color. Red hair can look horrible when your roots start to grow in and your hair starts fading to an icky orange color. Theres a few things I do to prevent this. First you need to hold off on dying your hair as long as you can. If your hair grows very slow then this should be easy. However, if your hair is anything like mine its week four and you've got an inch of roots. Try only dying your roots instead of your whole head when you need a touch up. This will prevent more damage. DO NOT WASH YOUR HAIR EVERYDAY. I know, i know. Gross, but dry shampoo will become your best friend. Try washing in cool water and also make sure to buy a shampoo specifically for red heads. Some shampoos will come with red pigment in them that will deposit into your hair keeping your color fresh! If this doesn't seem to give your hair that rich color it had three weeks ago, try using Manic Panic. I. LOVE. MANIC. PANIC. I will use one of the red shades of Manic Panic once a month on my hair. I leave mine on for an hour. This just refreshes my red and keeps it looking rich. Ive used most if not all of the red shades available from Manic Panic and I like them all. It truly just depends on what look your going for.
I hope these tips were helpful to you and your red hair journey. Just remember, its only hair :) xoxo Kristin
